The Hereford Symphony Orchestra (HSO) was founded in September 1958 as Hereford String Orchestra, an advanced strings evening class. It quickly became established as an independent orchestra and today it is the only regular adult orchestra in Herefordshire. The HSO has played under several conductors, Richard Coppack, Kenneth Woods, James Slater, Tim Harrison and currently Michael Bell, MBE. The HSO is now a full symphony orchestra with committed woodwind, brass and percussion players joining the established string sections.
The Hereford Symphony Orchestra performs at least three concerts a year, playing music that has ranged from major symphonic classics by Vaughan Williams, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Brahms, to the film music of John Williams.
