The 10th Hay Music Festival….
….. takes as its theme ‘Exiles and Émigrés’. This three-day festival features the renowned Fitzwilliam String Quartet which will be the Ensemble in Residence and includes concerts, jazz, film screenings, discussions, an art installation and outreach events.
The Festival’s theme brings an interesting focus to the works in the programme, showcasing composers who have experienced life in exile or as émigrés and the impact it has had on their music. Across the centuries musicians and composers have fled from political instability, war and persecution, and have sought refuge in major cultural cities, or have been forced to flee across continents to countries far from their native land. Composers forced to flee their homelands often carried with them the weight of displacement and the loss of their own cultural context, but these exiles and émigrés often made significant contributions to their new host countries, enriching its cultural landscape with their own national identity.
Performances will take place in various venues around Hay-on-Wye including St Mary’s Church, The Globe at Hay and Hay Castle.
