Across the centuries musicians and composers have fled from political instability, war and persecution, and have sought refuge in major cultural cities, or have been forced to flee across continents to countries far from their native land. Composers forced to flee their homelands often carried with them the weight of displacement and the loss of their own cultural context, but these exiles and émigrés often made significant contributions to their new host countries, enriching its cultural landscape with their own national identity.
